I know I'm going to avoid the major freeways on Saturday. With all the Christians getting Raptured think of all the driverless cars aimlessly coasting down the road. It's going to be a mess.

Advice needed about my study with a JW.
by Resistance is Futile ini've never been a jw, and i'm having a difficult time trying to understand the perspective of a born-in jw.
i want to ask questions that will cause this family member to began to think outside the box, but i don't want to trip off any apostate alarms and have him put his guard up.
i also don't want to waste time and energy asking questions that he can easily brush off and give the prepackaged watchtower answer without having to really think.

Thanks everyone for all the great advice. How often is 1919 even mentioned in Watchtower material anymore? If I bring up obscure teachings he might go on the defensive, realizing that I know a lot more about the religion than I’ve let on. I’ll certainly ask about it if I find a safe lead-in to the subject. I've already started to ask questions about the convoluted mess of the 1914 doctrine, but I get the impression that the current generation of born-ins is fairly oblivious to 1919. As "inbetween" mentioned the average JW doesn't even need invisible Jesus picking them to support the belief that they have the "truth". A few cherry picked scriptures such as Matthew 24:14 is all that’s needed if they began to doubt any of the teachings of the Society. "Where else will we go? Who else is preaching worldwide?"
steve2, I certainly understand where you're coming from. But, this isn't some wide-eyed home schooled door knocking stranger I'm "studying" with. It's a family member, and from what I can tell a fairly intelligent young adult. I certainly don't expect miracles to happen from this study. Most of the members of this forum were at one point in the exact same position his is in. I realize that I have a very short window of opportunity, if I keep asking difficult questions the study will eventually end. At that point I can walk away knowing I did as much as I could with the opportunity that was presented to me. He's already mentioned that he doesn't "associate" with non-members. So the only way I can even discuss the doctrines of the Watchtower with him is by showing interest as a potential recruit. I certainly don’t feel as though the study is a waste of time.

I'd go see your doctor. Have you had bad back pain before? Any serious injuries before? I hope you began to feel better soon.

I've always wanted to earnestly ask if they have ever shunned someone close to them and how they feel about it.
I already asked that one. I know firsthand that his family has been torn apart by this cultish practice. The response I got was a complete suppression of human emotions. I also saw the typical place the blame on the person who is no longer part of the group. "They left Jehovah. They want to sin. They want to live without rules." I got the impression that showing too much real emotion about the situation might imply a lack of faith in "God's ways". I do plan on bringing up the shunning policy again, but I imagine that's not a subject they feel very comfortable discussing with a potential convert. It certainly doesn't give the best witness about the love they have amongst themselves.

i've got extended family in the religion.

Satan is a fictional boogieman. A primitive superstition. A construct of the human mind. So he can observe time in anyway that you want him to.

When you were still a JW how would you have answered this question, "Was Jehovah using an earthly organization from the time in between the first century until Charles Russell started his organization in the late 1800's?" "Which organization had the truth during that time period?" Like I said I'm trying to ask questions that might not have easy or satisfactory answers contained in the WT CD.
Can anyone offer up any questions or issues that really caused you to stop and think when you were a JW? What were some of the early red flags you may have noticed about the Watchtower doctine or organization?

Oh boy. So according to the Watchtower, Jesus was apparently just "hanging out" in heaven from 33 C.E. till 1914. I guess he needed a vacation anyway, it's got to be tough living up to the expectations of being perfect.

If I'm confusing Watchtower doctrine please correct me. Most JW's have a hard time understanding and explaining all their doctrine, so go easy on me.

My background, I've never been a JW. I've got extended family in the religion. Most were born-in. I'm in the middle of a Bible Watchtower Publication study with one of them who thinks I'm interested in joining the religion.
The "Bible Teach?" book says that Jesus returned to heaven a few weeks after he was resurrected in 33 C.E. Answer me this question, and I'm curious how you would have answered this question back when you were a "true believer" in JW doctrine. How the hell did Jesus return to heaven in 1914 if he was already there to began with?
Bonus question. Is anyone here familiar with Seventh-day Adventist doctrine considering what happened in "heaven" in 1844?

Any JW, please help- I need just one thing!
by moshe in--the name of a real live (not dead) member of the faithful and discreet slave class- someone who has admitted in public they are one of the f&ds and who can verify they have been providing the "meat in due season" for the governing body.
obviously the gb can't be the f&ds, because they are neither discreet nor do they have a position of servitude- no, they have made it plain they are the bosses over jws and jws have to obey their words, as if jehovah and jesus were speaking them, or else they will get the disfellowshiped.
just one verifiable name will do and how you obtained it.. the governing body claims that the f&ds are directing them and the worldwide work of jws, but they have never proven that they have a f&ds class they communicate with- just have one of the annointed call bethel and ask to speak to one of the gb and see what the switchboard operator does with their call.

I thought the members of the Governing Body are considered to be part of the Faithful and Discreet Slave? The real bait and switch for JW's is that they're told jesus appointed the "Slave Class" but in reality they're being led by a small group of men who "represent" the Slave. And they claim they don't go beyond the things written in the bible, haha.
